Why is teenage stress such a big deal?

Teenage Stress is a big thing not only because it can cause serious damage and life threatening health consequences, like it does in an adult, but it can permanently throw the normal developmental process off track. Teen Stress has been proven as an indirectly cause of eating disorders, depression, social/physical/emotional changes, and suicide.

It is very important not to under emphasis the importance of stress at this stage of life - how to recognize it, how to deal with it, and how to relieve it.

Many teenagers experience stress but many do not know What Stress Is . And many do not know the origins of their stress, the importance of learning effective teen stress management skills, and what may happen if their stress is disregarded or downplayed.

UNDERSTANDING TEEN STRESS

Teen stress is similar to the adult stress in terms of the signs and symptoms. But the causes of teen stress are different (see the teen stress scale below) and allthough the stress tools and techniques may be the same they need stress management programs that are geared with the the root causes in mind.

For example, it's important to remember in conjunction with factors on the stress scale that a huge number of physical, mental and emotional changes are also occur during this period, which are very significant in the shaping a person.

It is estimated that teens form 20% of the total population.

Surveys conducted shows that one third of the teenagers suffer at least one episode of stress every week.

EARLY WARNING TEEN "STRESS OVERLOAD" SIGNS

  • Increased physical illness (headaches, stomach aches, muscle pains, chronic fatigue)

  • "Shutting down" and withdrawal from people and activities
  • Increased anger or irritable lashing out at others
  • Increased tearfulness and feelings of hopelessness
  • Chronic feelings of worry and nervousness
  • Difficulty sleeping and eating
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Depression

    TEENAGE STRESS, DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE

    Teenagers experience strong feelings of stress, confusion, self-doubt, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, and other fears while growing up. For too many teens, suicide may appear to be a solution to their problems and stress.

    Suicides among young people continue to be a serious problem. Each year in the U.S., thousands of teenagers commit suicide.

    Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-to-24-year-olds, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5-to-14-year-olds.

    Depression and suicidal feelings are treatable disorders and often strong indicators of stress overload.


    TEENAGE STRESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS

  • Taking deep breaths accompanied by thoughts of being in control ("I can handle this")

  • Progressive muscle relaxation, (repeatedly tensing and relaxing large muscles of the body)
  • Setting small goals and breaking tasks into smaller manageable chunks
  • Exercising and eating regular meals, and avoiding excessive caffeine
  • Focusing on things you can control and letting go of things you cannot control
  • Rehearsing and practicing feared situations (e.g., practicing public speaking or asking someone out on a date)
  • Talking about problems with others, including parents, older adults and friends
  • Lowering unrealistic expectations
  • Scheduling breaks and enjoyable activities, such as music, art, sports, socializing
  • Accepting yourself as you are and identifying unique strengths and building on them, but realizing no one is perfect!
